Book to Cook! Watch Hawa Hassan make Lebanese Fried Cauliflower

Drizzled with tahini, Lebanese fried cauliflower, or arnabeet mekleh, is easy and delicious.

Author Hawa Hassan’s newest cookbook is “Setting a Place for Us: Recipes and Stories of Displacement, Resilience and Community from Eight Countries Impacted by War.” Hassan was born in Mogadishu, Somalia, and fled with her family amid war in 1990. They settled into a refugee camp in Kenya, where her mother set up a goods store stocked with cooking ingredients. “This is when I learn what grace looks like,” writes Hassan, who eventually moved to Seattle.

Drawing from her experiences as a refugee, she wrote her second cookbook (her first was James Beard award-winning “In Bibi’s Kitchen”) to explore countries and communities facing ongoing unrest, leaving its mark on culinary traditions. Hassan stopped by the L.A. Times Kitchen to cook arnabeet mekleh, Lebanese fried cauliflower with tahini. Get the recipe.
